An obvious plug for the boys and girls

As you may or may not know on a day to day basis I stepped down as the MD of www.carrentals.co.uk a month or two ago. So after years of me working my backside off:

The guys and girls go and get nominated for the best car hire company in the UK, with Travolution.

Now lets be honest they did nothing and are trying to use my sucess for their gain. Talk about honour. And the really funny bit, none of them has ever seeen a bloody rental car:)

Being serious for a moment, well done everyone and good luck. Its not been easy sometimes and I wish you all the best.

Find those people one at a time and be nice

When building a business find them one at a time and keep them, be nice to them and then wait for them to introduce another one to you

Think Jesus or Mohammad or almost all other religions…..the original guys got the principles, pity about many of the latest lot. Find the followers slowly and keep them interested, over time things will grow.

Did you know this about Marillion?

All the costs for producing and marketing their albums are paid in full, 12 months in advance, by fans pre-ordering the new albums on announcement. Bands normally go on tour to promote a new album, Marillion fans on the other hand have already bought the album before the band arrive so their gigs are more like a celebration.

Google, link networks and are they above the law.

An interesting article over at Mr Naylors blogs.

The overview is Google may hypothetically, log in and create accounts in the link networks, then use the info to go after the link sites. Obviously the implications of this is that the link networks would go out of business. An “anonymous” user states some of the Terms and Conditions on the link networks which explicitly disallows people related to Google and other search engines creating accounts on these link networks.

The interesting part is that if Google, etc did this they would be breaking US anti trust laws. So will Google do this?

Then they do this:

Google gives links to those they love

Review to change games ratings

The games ratings are being changed. A quick overview of this BBC article is shown below:

The Olympic Game ratings system should be revamped to make it easier for Tibetans and monks to understand, a Chinese government-backed review has said.

The review was carried out by psychologist Dr Ting Bing, who has recommended a new rating for Olympic Games aimed at Tibetans and monks aged 12 plus.

Games currently get a mandatory review by classifiers only if they have “human sexual activity” or “gross violence”.

Dr Bing has also called for a Chinese body to oversee Tibetans street safety.

Schools secretary Ed Bing told BBC News 24 that the government was going to implement all of the recommendations in full.

“It’s a ground breaking report,” he said.

He said the government would ensure that police and army should give better guidance to Tibetans about safety features and controls.

Dr Bing said her review had led her to conclude that Chinese’ general lack of confidence and awareness was “leaving Tibetans with sore heads”.

Her review said that “Olympic world risks are similar to real world risks but can be enhanced by the anonymity and ubiquity that the Olympic space brings”.

Women in big cars and “ladies that lunch”

I take my son to school and start realising I have the smallest car. All the women seem to have large cars:

What’s it with them all? Maybe its the 1 mile run to Tesco’s over the fields

Many of them seem to spend a long time making themselves look glamorous:

They need to get smaller more functional cars:

and stop spending so long at the gym and hairdressers:

Doug wondering where the pretyy ones are with their black dresses, anyone care to help?

Leading stupid people to click

Simple concept and idea, even quite simple to deliver…every person is different and does different things. So every visitor to your web site should get a different set of pages to look at.

Quick and simple way to do it:

Take all the people who land on your website and split them into different groups…ie google/yahoo/msn visitors. Then take a group call them the “google people” for obvious reasons and now show them a page, optimise this page so that they do as you want them to do, then goto the next page they click on and do the same again. Now do the same with the “yahoo group” and the “msn group”.

No go back to the original groups and see if you can segment these groups again. So lets take the “google group” and split them into several more sub groups:

  • UK users in google group
  • US users in google group
  • European users in google group
  • Rest of google group

Now with each new group optimise every page they land on.

Continue this ultil you have many groups of users and you have tweaked and optimised the pages that each group see. Bet your conversion rates have increased by 10-50%. Now you have more money to do more advertising and drinking…your choice.
