Double paying – being in organic and paid

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

We have been trialing this for months and our results are quite simple:

  • If term is generic and you are number 1 in the organic results and term is cheap then be in paid.
  • If term is generic and you are number 1 in the organic results and term is expensive then do not be in paid.
  • If term is generic and you are not number 1 in the organic results then be in paid.
  • If term is your brand then be in paid

niche makes no difference from what we see…it is dependent on cost per click and value of click to you.

30% duplication of traffic is what we find if you rank number 1 in organic and are on top bar in serps

We gave up trying to do detailed modelling as it was too hard….so we just cam up with the above simple model. We losted some business but saved a fortune in ppc spends…..ie 5% drop in sales, 50% saving in ppc.
