Offshore Outsourcing to Companies in India – corners they cut

Monday, June 30th, 2008

We have all tried it, outsourcing to indians.

Good luck is what I can say in most cases. It’s like the food, prior to ordering it the deal looks appealing, lovely few links/content, cheap, but sometimes later it can all feel a bit sore.

It’s not quite what you thought it would be……shock.

We now have numerous companies round the world we outsource work to and even some in India, but we have a simple motto….don’t outsource your problems.

If you thought it was a pain and hard to do, then so will someone else. Make the task really simple, make sure you can do it with your eyes closed, write a process and then outsource it. If it takes more than 5 minutes to explain what you want don’t bother.

Definitely agree with not outsourcing your problems. That is why so many people fall down trying outsource full web site builds – they struggle in the UK with easy communication so how hard will it be to make a complex build work and cost cut with India. If we outsource anything remotely complex we pay a ridiculous premium in the country so we can get the very best people of a level we couldn’t afford here. In this situation it’s not about cost cutting but getting access to skills.

meh – worked for a company that went into offshoring in a big way, was the answer to all our competiveness problems.

The idea was that the offshore staff cost a 1/10th of onshore staff, what could go wrong?

Well unfortunately offshore staff were 10 times less productive and onshore staff had to spend much of our time training and fixing so we became less productive too.

All the good offshore guys (there were some great guys we worked with) left for higher paid positions or came onshore at onshore rates.

Still, I’ve heard some people have made it work.
